W / Zr-DLC coating

Protective coatings

Process

The deposition process is based on a hybrid method which combines electron beam evaporation (EB) and arc evaporation (EA).

Two coating machines, developed and built at the Institute for Sustainable Technologies – National Research Institute in Radom, are used in the technological process:

Standard Coating Machine – for deposition of Zr-DLC layer, approx. 1.5 μm thick.
The multi-layer W/Zr-DLC coating with a total thickness of about 7.5 μm is characterized by very high hardness of about 3,800 HV, good abrasion resistance in elevated temperatures, as well as low wettability by liquid copper. The multi-layer W/Zr-DLC coating is perfectly suitable for use as an anti-wear layer to protect graphite elements used in non-ferrous metal foundries.
